How I Managed Anxiety and Panic (Techniques)
The feeling of having an anxiety or panic attack is awful. Anyone who has had one would probably give their left foot not to have one again, I know I would! When I was suffering with severe anxiety I read every book out there about it and was desperately searching for a way to make it stop.
Please note that I am not a doctor or therapist so I want you to keep that in mind while reading these tips, check out my disclaimers page. I am just someone who suffered from anxiety and wanted to feel better and found ways to do so.
These are some things I did that helped alleviate my anxiety. Check with your doctor before trying the products I recommend to make sure they are safe for you.
The number one thing I did was prayer and fasting! These were the #1 keys to my healing! Asking God for deliverance and trusting him to do it. I also wanted to walk out my faith by doing what I could to relieve the symptoms but I left it to God to get to the root of my problem and pluck it! I know some of you may not be Christians or religious, but I truly believe my faith in God and his ability to heal is what helped me the most.
Another thing that really helped me was reading books, blogs, articles about anxiety and panic. Having a relatable resource helped me feel as though I was not alone. This was one of the reasons I actually started blogging. I wanted people to know that they were not alone in their struggles.
When my suffering was at an all time high, my cousin suggested this book to me and it literally changed my life. I plan to read it again soon. The book is called Lord, I Want to be Whole: The Power of Prayer and Scripture in Emotional Healing, by Stormie Omartian. In this book Stormie Omartian takes you through her experiences with panic and emotional issues. She talks about how she was healed from anxiety, panic, and other emotional dependencies.
Another thing I did was I started taking a magnesium supplement called: "Natural Calm: Anti-Stress Drink" the product claims "Natural Calm is the solution to both restoring a healthy magnesium level and balancing your calcium intake—the result of which is natural stress relief."
According to this article from Psychology Today "Magnesium is an old home remedy for all that ails you, including "anxiety, apathy, depression, headaches, insecurity, irritability, restlessness, talkativeness, and sulkiness." In 1968, Wacker and Parisi(link is external) reported that magnesium deficiency could cause depression, behavioral disturbances, headaches, muscle cramps, seizures, ataxia, psychosis, and irritability - all reversible with magnesium repletion."
I found this product to really work. I drank it before bed and felt a lot calmer in the morning. One warning is this stuff gets your bowels moving also so start with the smallest dose until you get used to it. It can also make you a little groggy the next day if you take it too late at night.
Other things that helped me include:
- Listening to calming classical music in a dark room.
- Chewing Gum and Drinking water when I felt I couldn't stop taking deep breaths.
- Deep Breathing (in through nose out through mouth).
- Sitting in a chair and planting my feet as hard as I could to the floor while pressing down on my thighs.
- Tensing up then releasing my body from head to toe until I calmed down.
- Talking to someone, anyone about a random thing until I felt the anxiety pass, even if it was just talking to myself out loud to distract myself from how I was feeling inside this helped me.
Lastly, singing and dancing with my kids! Their joy became my joy and helped me feel better!
I refused to live in fear and be a prisoner in my own head and body. I had to take action.
These are just a few tips. I will do another post at a later date about this very important topic. Please leave comments and let us know what works for you.
