MOOD BOOSTERS TO TRY WHEN YOU FEEL DOWN
There comes a time every now and then...well monthly to be frank, when I might feel down or my mood is low. During these times I don't feel like doing much, and I don't feel like being around others. Sometimes I know what the cause is (diet, monthly cycle, stress) and sometimes I do not.
After 35 years of life I have found a few things that help me to boost my mood during these time and feel better. Today I wanted to share some mood boosters to try when you feel down.
+ Take a walk.
Exercise is a great way to boost your mood. I can actually tell the difference in my mood when I haven't exercised. My energy is low, I feel a little edgy and just not myself. According to this article by the American Psychological Association "The link between exercise and mood is pretty strong," Otto says. "Usually within five minutes after moderate exercise you get a mood-enhancement effect." This is pretty awesome and I find it to be true.
The next time you are feeling down, go for a walk, a jog or attend a fitness class. I actually prefer to exercise in the morning to get a head start on its mood boosting properties.

+ Eat Something.
One of the first things I do when I am feeling down or moody is ask myself..."have you eaten?"... Hangriness is real. When your blood glucose levels drop, your brain notices. It becomes hard to function and focus on regular tasks, you may also become snappy with the people around you. You become "Hangry"...
Once you eat...you feel like a new person, a human in fact! Make sure you try to eat before you get to that point. I suggest carrying around some healthy snacks like fruit, nuts or seeds. These are things you can eat quickly when a full meal isn't available. You will never find me without a snack in my purse, that's a known fact...ask my kids! ;)
+ Turn up the beat.
Listening to your favorite tunes can almost immediately improve your mood. I remember when I had a 45-minute commute home from work, I hated being stuck in traffic. Just the thought of my evening commute made me start feeling anxious and low. I found that when I blasted my favorite music on the ride home I felt much better and the commute didn't seem so bad either.
I'd suggest creating a playlist with all of your favorite uplifting songs. The next time you need a quick mood booster just turn up the beat!
+ Take a nap.
Some days taking a nap cures everything. I love naps and I used to take one every day. Sometimes a bad mood comes from being sleep deprived. "Evidence suggests that when people are sleep-deprived, they feel more irritable, angry and hostile. Sleep loss is also associated with feeling more depressed. In addition, sleep deprivation seems to be associated with greater emotional reactivity --people who suffer from sleep loss are especially likely to react negatively when something doesn’t go well for them." When I need a nap, I like to set my alarm for about 25 minutes when I have the time. I make sure my room is dark and I let everyone know I'm going for a nap. In other words, DO NOT DISTURB. I have found that just this small amount of time I have to unwind and relax do wonders for boosting my mood. I even take naps in my car at work when I'm desperate, no shame in my game.
+ Count your blessings.
Last but not least, something that I always do to boost my mood is I reflect on my blessings. It's hard to stay feeling down when you recognize how blessed you are. I look at the big and small things...my family is healthy, I have a great husband, I have a job, car, home and food to eat.
All of these things are enough to give me an immediate boost. The next time you feel low look at the big picture and see if the good in your life doesn't outweigh the bad. Most of the time we have a lot more good going on than we realize.

These are all things I have done to help boost my mood. I understand that sometimes the issue is much deeper. If you feel the low and sad days a more frequent than the regular or happy days you may want to consider talking to your doctor.
