4 Ways To Spice Up Your Next Cardio Session

4 Ways To Spice Up Your Next Cardio Session

Cardio is Hardio! But we gotta do it or at least we should! According to the American Heart Association, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise.  Many people turn to cardio to get in these exercise requirements. Treadmills, Elliptical machines and Stairmasters are all great and effective cardio machines, however doing a 30-60 minute session on one can be the most BORING THING EVER!!!! But don't fret my friend, today I'm going to share a few things you can do to spice up your next cardio session.

4 Ways To Spice Up Your Next Cardio Session

Break it up.

When I have a long cardio session on deck I like to break it up. I like to do this by adding some strength moves in between. For instance, if I am running on the treadmill I might run for 10 minutes then hop off and do 10 squats, 10 push-up and 10 lunges. Then I will hop back on the treadmill and run another 10 minutes or so. I am still meeting my cardio requirement but I find this gives me something to look forward to.

Listen to Podcasts.

I love listening to podcasts. I listen to them when I workout and ride the train to work. I actually enjoy listening to them any time I have some free quiet time. I feel like podcasts are a great way to learn about things and see different views on things that you wouldn't normally think about.

When I listen to them when I do cardio I feel like they really make the time pass by. Some of my favorite podcasts to listen to are:

The Dave Ramsey Podcast

Chris Brown's True Stewardship

The Pro Blogger Podcast

Focus on the Family Podcast

Family Life Today

Build Your Tribe with Chalene Johnson

All of these can be downloaded for free on the Apple podcast store.

Grab a Buddy.

If you are someone who usually does cardio on your own, consider asking a friend to join you next time. You can take your cardio outdoors to switch things up. When I have a walking or running buddy it usually makes my cardio workout a little more exciting. They may even push you to work even harder.

Take a Class.

When I'm in a cardio based workout class, surrounded by other sweaty pumped up people the time FLIES by. No matter how tough the class is I believe if there is good energy and a good instructor you won't have a chance to think about the time. My favorite classes to go to are spin classes and boot camp classes.

There are so many new classes to try out. Use a service like Class pass or even Groupon to find some new classes to try in your area.

Ok friends, These are just a few things I do to spice up my cardio sessions. I hope these ideas will be helpful to you as well.

How do you spice up your cardio routines?
