NO MORE 24 CAMPAIGN UPDATE
This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of LiveWell Colorado. The opinions and text are all mine.
This past summer I shared with you the fact that Colorado is known as one of the fittest states in the country. Unfortunately, this statistic only applies to Colorado adults. Colorado kids rank 24th out of 50th for health and physical activity. As a Colorado parent, this was very concerning to me.
I decided to team up with LiveWell Colorado and the No More 24 campaign to spread awareness to Colorado parents, teachers and other concerned parties. Be sure to check out my post previous post all about the No More 24 campaign here.
When I shared with you that less than half of middle schoolers in Colorado has P.E. five days a week, you were surprised and saddened. This campaign has also helped bring to light that In addition to a lack of physical activity, some Colorado kids face barriers that put them at a higher risk for childhood obesity. According to The Colorado Health Foundation:
"Low-income families, Hispanics, African-Americans and rural communities are more likely to lack healthy food options and safe places to be physically active close to home. Barriers like these within their communities leads to higher rates of obesity."
These are facts that the No More 24 campaign is setting out to change. Since the start of the No More 24 campaign, more than 22,401 Coloradans have signed up to fight again childhood obesity and inactivity in Colorado.
Some of you who are not Coloradans even said that you would research your own state's statistics and see how you could get involved. I believe this is a great start but it doesn't stop here.
We have to continue to be advocates for our children's health in our communities, requiring that every neighborhood has:
- Nutritious food at school
- Healthy, affordable food in all Colorado communities
- At least 30 minutes of physical activity each day in school for all students
- Access to affordable recreational spaces after school for all children
- Safe walking and biking opportunities
You can still take part in this campaign and join the fight to stop childhood obesity. Visit livewellcolorado.org/no-more-24 to sign the pledge today. If we work together we change our children's health and future for the better.
Childhood obesity ends with you,
Are you in?
