I first started drinking smoothies, particularly green smoothies when I was pregnant with my son. He was my first child and I didn’t have the healthiest diet when I got pregnant with him. I have always been a fitness fanatic but not always the healthiest eater.
I learned quickly that I needed nutrients such as iron, calcium, folic acid and folate to keep my baby and body healthy. I also needed fiber, protein and healthy fats to have the healthiest baby possible.
After much research and trial and error, I found that smoothies were a great way to get the nutrients that I needed and quickly. My son is 11 now and that's about how long I have been obsessed with making smoothies. Until this day I have one just about daily.
WHY YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE A SMOOTHIE EACH DAY
The number one reason you should add smoothies to your diet is because you may not be getting the recommended amount of fruits and veggies in your diet. According to Fruits and Veggies More Matters, the average American eats only 43% of recommended fruit and 57% recommended veggies each day. You can check out the recommendations here. These percentages leave a pretty large deficit.
Having a smoothie with lots of fruit and veggies added, is a quick way to fill in the gap and reach your recommended daily intake of fruit and veggies. Adding items such as flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts and psyllium husk can help you get more fiber, protein, omega's and fatty acids in your diet.
The nutrients provided by fruit and vegetables are essential for energy, vitality and overall wellbeing.
My second reason you should add smoothies to your diet, is they may help you lose weight. I know that at this time of the year we are all getting back on our healthy lifestyle journey. Some of us are also trying to lose a little weight. I am a firm believer that smoothies can help us do just that.
Drinking smoothies may help you lose weight when, you replace an unhealthy snack for a smoothie, or when add ingredients that will help keep you satiated and full. There is an excellent article on Straight Forward Fat Loss about using smoothies for weight loss. Check it out here.
I usually have a high protein and high fiber smoothie for breakfast or when I get home from work. Having one as soon as I get home helps to keep me from snacking on goldfish crackers and fruit snacks. They fill me up and hold me over until dinner.
Smoothies are also good pre-workout for the times that you don't want to have a heavy meal but something to give you energy for your workout.
In conclusion, I want to remind you that smoothies have been around for a long time now and that is no coincidence. They have staying power in the heath, fitness and nutrition industry because they are great, and are a great addition to a healthy lifestyle. Click below to see all of my smoothie blog posts.
